NECD’s new District 1 police commander is far from new to Durham. A 27-year veteran of the Durham Police Department, Captain Paul Daye hopes to build on initiatives already working in the community.
Daye, a graduate of Southern High School, went on to major in biology and minor in chemistry at Winston Salem State University.
“Biology and chemistry tied into working with crime scenes, plus I liked law enforcement, so the transition to working with the Criminal Investigative Division was an easy one,” said Daye.
In 1983, he started with the Department of Public Safety in the Criminal Investigation Division. He worked with them until 1989.
As captain, Daye plans to continue initiatives started under Captain Winslow Forbes. The We As One Commander’s Tour, is one of the programs Daye would like to build on. On the tour, District 1 commanders and staff members ride through the neighborhood and converse with residents about issues and problems.
“Having the community safer and having the crime rate lower is very important to me,” said Daye. “I want to get aggressive in dealing with drug dealers and prostitution.”
Daye is revered as a leader, hard worker, and a person willing to get everybody involved in District 1.
“When you work with him, he makes it a team effort,” said Assistant District Commander Walter Tate. “I often have to tell him take time for yourself, but he’s very focused and he wants to get the job done and see everyone succeed.”
Though he has seen improvement in the community during his time as District 1 Commander, Daye hopes to see community and neighborhood watches grow, increased participation in the Citizen Observer Patrol (COP) program, and increased attendance at Partners Against Crime (PAC) meetings.
Daye was promoted to captain in January and oversaw the Community Service Bureau until September when he was promoted to District 1 Commander.
“He’s a ‘boots on the ground’ captain,” said Tate.
