CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-In the latest chapter of one of college basketball’s most storied rivalries, Duke stormed into Chapel Hill on March 8, 2025, and walked away with an emphatic 82-69 victory over North Carolina. With this win, the Blue Devils secured the outright ACC regular-season title and sent a strong message ahead of the conference tournament. For Duke fans, the night was about more than just another tally in the win column—it was a display of dominance in enemy territory.

College GameDay Takes Over Chapel Hill

Get your signs, face paint, and school spirit ready because College GameDay was back in Chapel Hill, bringing an electrifying atmosphere to the Dean E. Smith Center. There is nothing quite like the passion and energy of College GameDay, where fans pour into the arena hours before tipoff, eager to make their voices heard and their signs seen on national television.

With ESPN’s GameDay crew—Rece Davis, Jay Bilas, Seth Greenberg, and Jay Williams—broadcasting live from the Dean Dome, the excitement was at an all-time high. The matchup marked the third showdown of the season between the Tar Heels and Blue Devils, making the anticipation even more intense. Fans from all over the country traveled to witness the spectacle, filling the stands with a sea of Carolina blue.

But beyond the game itself, GameDay was a chance for students and alumni to showcase their creativity. From humorous jabs at Duke to pop culture references, the crowd brought some of the most entertaining and eye-catching posters of the season. As tipoff approached, the energy only built, setting the stage for another unforgettable clash between these two basketball powerhouses.

The Battle on Tobacco Road

Duke wasted no time asserting themselves, jumping out to a commanding lead in the first half thanks to sharpshooting and stifling defense. Freshman standout Cooper Flagg, whose name was on the lips of many leading up to the game, played a pivotal role.

“Tonight, I’m going to go with Cooper Flagg. I think it’s an easy pick,” said Duke fan Kevin Garcia, a sophomore neuroscience major, ahead of the matchup. “It’s unfortunate, but he’s a baller.”

Flagg delivered on that prediction, finishing the night with 15 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. Kon Knueppel led the Blue Devils in scoring with 17 points, while veterans Tyrese Proctor and Sion James each added 16.

UNC’s Push, Duke’s Response

North Carolina, led by veteran guard RJ Davis, refused to go down without a fight. The Tar Heels erased a 15-point deficit with a blistering 22-6 run spanning halftime, briefly seizing a 56-49 lead early in the second half. But Duke’s poise under pressure quickly flipped the script.

“I think we need to keep Duke out of the paint,” said UNC fan Aidan Driscoll, a sophomore biology major, before the game. “The more paint touches they get, the more they’re going to be able to create chances to score.”

Despite UNC’s efforts, Duke’s inside-out attack proved unstoppable. A decisive 12-0 run midway through the second half put the Blue Devils back in the driver’s seat. From that point on, they never looked back, closing the game on a dominant 33-13 stretch.

Keys to Victory: Defense and Rebounding

Both teams came in knowing the battle would be won on the defensive end and the glass.

“We gotta play defense,” said Mateen Haqqar Mirdiabad, a UNC senior majoring in radiologic science. “We need to rebound.”

Rebounding was indeed a difference-maker. Duke outrebounded UNC 39-26, limiting second-chance opportunities and keeping the Tar Heels from establishing an offensive rhythm. Their defensive rotations were crisp, shutting down driving lanes and forcing UNC into tough perimeter shots.

“That can’t happen,” added Sammy Schmitz, a sophomore economics and psychology double major, about UNC allowing open shots. “If we avoid those paint touches and make the kicks from a bigger distance and get out to the closeout, we’ll be fine.”

Duke held UNC to just 39.1% shooting from the field and a paltry 32.4% in the second half. Their suffocating defense turned what looked like a possible Tar Heel comeback into a late-game rout.

Historical Weight and Rivalry Reflections

This rivalry, dating back to 1920, has produced countless unforgettable moments, from buzzer-beaters to heartbreaks. This game, while not coming down to the wire, will be remembered as a statement win for Duke in a hostile environment.

While the loss may sting for Tar Heel fans, there’s still hope on the horizon with the ACC Tournament up next.

What’s Next?

With the win, Duke finished the regular season 28-3 overall and 19-1 in the ACC. As the top seed in the ACC Tournament, they’ll look to build on this momentum in Charlotte before making a run at a national title.

For North Carolina, the loss highlighted areas that need improvement—particularly perimeter defense and rebounding. But with talented players like RJ Davis and Ian Jackson, the Tar Heels remain a dangerous team heading into March Madness.

Regardless of where the season goes from here, this game was another thrilling chapter in the Duke-UNC rivalry, proving once again why it remains one of the greatest spectacles in college basketball.
