Durham Public School’s New Growing Together Plan

Durham Public Schools (DPS) implemented a plan, the first in the past 30 years, to tackle a grave lack of diversity through socioeconomic integration. Some 2,000 students will be reassigned to new schools as a result of the new zone divisions for DPS.

H.E.A.R.T.: Durham’s “fifth branch” of public safety still has room to grow

H.E.A.R.T. has grown tremendously since its inception in June 2022. Initially, the program was only able to operate in a third of the city from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Oct. 23, 2023, a budget increase expanded the program to the entire city, with at least one team available from 6 a.m. to midnight. This has provided H.E.A.R.T. with the resources to help many more neighbors: the team celebrated its 20,000th response in late August. Even now, the program has room to grow.

Citizens of Durham to vote on $200 million infrastructure bond referendum

The people of Durham on Nov. 5 are going to vote on a $200 million bond referendum to improve streets, sidewalks and parks across Durham. The referendum is split into two separate votes, one being $115 million for streets and sidewalks and the other $85 million for parks and recreation.
